Steps 1Wear the proper clothing. Padded cycling shorts and cycling jersey will make a world of difference. 2Get together a kit with a pump, puncture repair kit, cell phone and tool kit just in case something should happen. Read all manuals and make sure you know how to use them. 3Pack some high energy foods: bananas, pizza, energy drinks are a bad idea as they dehydrate and are full of sugar. You should always bring a plentiful supply of water. 4Work up to a trip of this length with shorter trips close to home. If you have been off your bike for a long time, even a mile or two will help you get back in the saddle, at first. If you're planning on longer trips, this is also a good time to road-test your gear. 5Warm up and stretch for 10 minutes. Star jumps, jogging on the spot and various leg stretches work best. This step is to avoid cramps in the legs, especially thighs. 6Start cycling at a pace which suits you, and try to keep this pace as best you can. 7When you come to a hill change to a lower gear to make it easier for yourself. 8Stop every 10-20 miles depending on your abilities. Consume some water and food. Check your bike for any problems. If something goes seriously wrong, use your cell phone to call for help. Before you continue your journey, drink some energy drink. 9Repeat this process over and over until you arrive at your destination.

I am fresh. I took the first trip several weeks ago, it was just about 60 kilometers. I'll do a longer trip...

Agree with the above and take it one pedal stroke at a time. It takes time to work on endurance and strength (for hill climbing). When I first began, I did 20-25 miles and I avoided hills because it took me forever to get to the top. Now, years later, a riding/training day for me is 60 miles which includes hills. :-)
